What actually drives your painting quote
Two flats of the same size can differ by 40% in price, and it is almost never the paint. The variables that matter, in order:
- Wall area, not floor area. A 1,000 sq ft flat has roughly 2,800–3,200 sq ft of paintable wall and ceiling. We measure it.
- Condition of the existing surface. Paint over sound paint is cheap. Paint over flaking distemper with hairline cracks and damp patches is not, because it needs scraping, putty and sometimes a damp treatment first.
- Paint tier. Economy emulsion and luxury washable emulsion differ by roughly 3× per litre. Both are honest choices for different rooms.
- Ceiling height and access. Double-height lobbies and stairwells need scaffolding, which is real time.
- Colour change depth. Going from dark to white needs an extra coat or a tinted primer. Light to light does not.
The monsoon problem, and why Punjab painting has a season
Punjab humidity sits high from late June through September. Paint applied to a wall holding moisture will blister and flake, usually within one season, and no paint brand prevents that. If a contractor is willing to paint your exterior in July without checking wall moisture, that is the single clearest sign to walk away.
The practical window is October to April. Interior work can run year-round in an air-conditioned or well-ventilated flat, but exterior and any freshly plastered wall needs to be genuinely dry. We carry a moisture meter on site visits and will tell you to wait if the wall is not ready — even though it delays our own payment.
Interior, exterior and texture — which do you actually need?
Interior emulsion is the default for bedrooms and living rooms: matt or silk finish, washable in the better tiers. Exterior paint is a different product entirely — it is elastomeric and UV-stable, and using interior paint outside is a false economy that fails in one monsoon. Texture and designer finishes are decorative overlays for one feature wall, typically the TV wall or the master bedroom headboard wall. They cost three to six times a plain coat, and they are extremely hard to patch later, so put them where furniture will not scuff them.
